Postural and ergonomic risks: Managing repetitive work on PCs, laptops and hand-held devices

Academics and administrators have a very predictable injury profile, with postural problems and overuse injury featuring prominently. Even so, knowledge of ergonomic risks has proved to be highly variable in this population. This presentation looks at how we should measure our fitness for work and our vulnerability to injury before we are faced with the limitations of specific injury. Principles of laptop and PC safety are explored and downstream injury factors assessed. Participants are required to test their physical range of movement and strength through a range of exercises.

Charles Fletcher worked in regulatory roles for Comcare before moving to CSIRO OHS risk management work. He managed the collaborative Overuse in Laboratories project with ANU, CSIRO and TGA, and in his current role as Injury Manager for ANU is an evangelist for a positive prevention culture.
