Professor Mykletun is from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the Faculty of Psychology at The University of Bergen. He is chair of a Norwegian expert group that has advised the Norwegian Government on how to reduce sickness absence, through strategies such as active participation measures, return-to-work strategies, and graduated sick leave.
He has used epidemiological methods to examine the consequences of mental illness on employment, mortality and disability.
